EU luggage rules

TRAVEL INFORMATION

Business travellers take note: EU luggage rules

Do you have flights booked within the European Union soon?

From 1st September 2024, travellers flying within the EU with major European airlines will face standardised hand luggage regulations. These rules will impact carry-on baggage allowances at all airports across all airlines operating in the EU.

EU rule changes for hand luggage

Here are the changes you need to know for carry-on bags, laptop bags, and other personal items. Also known as, the bag/items you carry on the plane yourself.

1. Liquid containers: the 100ml rule returns:

  • Liquid containers should not exceed 100ml.
  • All liquids must fit in a single, clear, resealable 1-litre plastic bag.

Previously, airports equipped with EDSCB (Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage) had allowed travellers to carry liquids in larger containers, however, the EU has standardised this limit to 100ml until all airports have the same airport security detection capabilities.

2. Maximum dimensions for carry-on luggage:

  • Your main cabin bag dimensions must not exceed 55 x 40 x 20 cm. That includes the handles and wheels.
  • Your under-seat bag or personal item, which can be a laptop bag or handbag is limited to dimensions of 40 x 30 x 15cm.
  • Larger items will become checked luggage.

3. Weight restrictions for carry on bags

  • Your main carry-on bag plus your personal item must not exceed 10kg.

These new rules aim to create consistency and uniformity across EU airports and airlines, helping airport security officials and simplifying the travel experience for passengers.

Impact of new cabin baggage rules for corporate travellers

The EU’s new standardised regulations may change how business travellers need to pack and prepare for air travel.

  • Consistency:  Uniform rules for cabin baggage across European airlines allow for more predictable packing.
  • Overhead compartment space: The specified maximum dimensions ensure that bags fit comfortably in overhead compartments, which could, in theory, speed up the boarding process for air travellers.
  • Checked luggage considerations: Some travellers may need to check bags that previously qualified as carry-on luggage. This could mean additional checked baggage fees charged at the time of your flight.
  • Additional rules may apply: check the rules for your specific airline before you leave for the airport in case of additional airline-imposed rule variations.

According to EU officials, these restrictions, particularly with regard to liquids, may evolve as more airports implement new screening technologies. Stay connected with FCM for the latest hand luggage rules and restrictions.
